Council Tax Bands in England: A Practical Guide
What Council Tax pays for
Council Tax funds local services: refuse collection, schools (via local authority), libraries, social care and more. It is billed by your billing authority (district or unitary council), not HMRC.
Bands A to H
Each home in England is assigned a band (A lowest through H highest) based on April 1991 open-market values — not today’s price. That is why two identical-looking houses can sit in different bands if one was worth more in 1991.
Our Council Tax calculadora helps once you know your band and your council’s multiplier for the year.
Common discounts
25% single-person discount if you are the only adult resident. Full-time students living alone or only with other students are often exempt. Empty properties may attract premiums — check your council.
